What are your thoughts on the GLP-1 trend?
“I think the advancement in medical weight loss and giving people an intervention option is fantastic because so many people struggle with body composition and their own metabolic management, and before this medication became so available, I think people felt almost like they weren’t in control of their metabolic health – that the goals they had were really unattainable – so the fact there is now an effective non-evasive tool to give people control of their weight management journey is a really good thing.”
How does collagen affect GLP-1 medication?
“Collagen is an ideal accompaniment to a GLP-1 medication regime – mostly because the mode of action of GLP-1 interferes with nutrient intake and absorption, and because some people are affected by gastrointestinal issues – the result of not being able to absorb enough means your body isn’t able to access key nutrients and proteins.
When someone is experiencing a loss of appetite or not consuming enough nutrients, they often avoid nutrient rich foods. Adding collagen to drinks like coffee and water, or yogurt and smoothies that are neutral in flavour - like our Flex+ and Glow+ blends - offer a simple way for someone to get a daily dose of collagen, even when they’re not motivated to eat or drink much.”
Is there a particular Pura product you’d recommend for GLP-1?
“I would probably begin with Glow+, for men and women. The skin is our biggest organ and VERISOL®, the Bioactive Collagen Peptides (BCPs) in that blend, activate the fibroblasts within your skin to product collagen - structurally it’s where you will see the biggest difference. I read a lot of consumer feedback from the GLP-1 community confirming that they start to see more sinking/sagging of skin - if you’re looking to make a visible change in your body’s composition, you’re definitely going to want to maintain the outer layer of your dermis structure.
A lot of our products fit perfectly with physique transformation – for instance, if you’re doing your GLP-1 journey alongside an exercise routine, which may be new or more exercise than in the past, injury or pain may affect your body , so looking after your joints is crucial.
The Bioactive Collagen Peptides in our Flex+ formula - FORTIGEL® and TENDOFORTE® - support the strength and structure of tendons, ligaments, cartilage and fascia. This helps maintain the body's foundational support system, whether you're on a weight loss journey or not.”
How to build your collagen routine while on GLP-1 medication
“GLP-1 medication has to be taken on a regular basis – the two most popular ones Ozempic® and Mounjaro® are self-administered via a weekly jab. Consistency is key to that medication working. Similarly, collagen is best when used in a regiment. If you’ve committed to the purchase of a collagen product, use it as directed.
Collagen can and in my opinion should be used along side GLP-1 courses to maintain optimal structural protein production. Our collagen source is versatile and safe, there are no contraindications with GLP-1. You can administer you GLP-1 medication and have your daily collagen dose over the same period.
I start every morning with a coffee, and my collagen goes straight in so I’m never in jeopardy of missing my daily dose, its part of my morning ritual. Pairing collagen intake with a daily ritual helps build consistency and makes it a seamless part of your lifestyle.”
