Menopause affects everything from moods, sleep, and weight to heart, brain, and bone health. Choosing the right supplement to manage different symptoms can be a minefield! Will it work? Are the ingredients safe and effective? Can it be taken alongside HRT?
Here we dig deeper into the menopause journey and find out exactly why Pura’s balance formula is designed to be your complete wellness solution for menopause and beyond.
How do I know if I’m menopausal?
There are 3 different stages to menopause: perimenopause, menopause, and post-menopause.
This stage usually begins in late 30s to mid-40s and it often starts earlier for Black women than in their white counterparts. During perimenopause oestrogen and progesterone are fluctuating, periods start to change, and lots of symptoms can appear. There are over 48 documented perimenopausal symptoms including insomnia, hot flushes, anxiety, forgetfulness, vaginal dryness, mood swings, and weight gain. This phase can last from a few years to more than a decade.
Early menopause (before the age of 40) can happen with Premature Ovarian Insufficiency (POI), cancer treatments, autoimmune conditions, or ovarian surgery.
Menopause is simply the point in time when you haven’t had a menstrual cycle for a full year – or 2 years if you are under 40.
Once you have had a whole year with no periods, you are in the post-menopause phase. By now, oestrogen and progesterone have plateaued at much lower rates than pre-menopause. This leads to increasing risk factors for cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, and metabolic changes such as high blood pressure and central weight gain which can predispose women to diabetes.
Do I need to take HRT?
The conventional treatment for menopausal symptoms is HRT – Hormone Replacement Therapy (or Menopause Hormone Therapy as it is sometimes known). This provides relief for thousands of women, but it isn’t suitable for everyone, it does carry the risk of side effects, and it’s not the only option for managing symptoms.
What’s the difference between body-identical and bio-identical HRT?
Both body-identical and bio-identical forms of HRT are made with the same raw materials: steroid molecules derived from wild yam or soy. Because they are natural compounds, they cannot be patented. The difference between body-identical and bio-identical HRT is in the production and delivery of the medication.
- Body-identical forms of HRT are produced by pharmaceutical companies. They patent the delivery method of the HRT – pill, patch, gel, pessary – and conduct trials to produce research data. Body-identical HRT is available on the NHS. Because it uses set dosages, the products are licensed and regulated by the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA).
- Bio-identical forms of HRT are made in compounding pharmacies to fulfil tailored prescriptions from GPs and other prescribing-practitioners. The pharmacy uses the same raw ingredients as body-identical HRT but can titrate the dosage according to the prescription and make the product into whichever form is needed: pill, gel, capsules, cream, lozenge, drops, or pessary.
These are not standardised products with set dosages, and as such they are not licensed and regulated by the MHRA. However, the raw ingredients used in both body-identical and bio-identical HRT have undergone decades of trials which indicate their safety when used within the correct guidelines.
How does balance help with the menopause?
Balance is a first-of-its-kind advanced female health formula. It provides a unique combination of Bioactive Collagen Peptides®, vitamins, minerals, and botanical extracts designed to support hormone health, energy levels, bone density, memory, and concentration at any stage of the menopausal journey.
FORTIBONE® Bioactive Collagen Peptides®
The FORTIBONE® peptides specifically target bone tissue to enhance bone density and reduce bone degradation. They are proven to:
- Stimulate bone-building cells called osteoblasts to produce bone matrix. This is the honeycomb mesh inside bones that holds calcium and other minerals.
- Regulate enzymes that breakdown old bone cells.
KSM-66® Ashwagandha is the most clinically studied ashwagandha extract available. Human studies have highlighted the benefits of KSM-66® ashwagandha for stress, anxiety, sleep, weight management, memory and cognition, and sexual wellness.
Vitamins and Minerals
The blend of vitamins C, D3, B12, B6, folic acid, and magnesium have been selected to aid bone mineralization, collagen production, mental wellbeing, and hormonal balance. Magnesium is especially important during menopause for its relaxing effects that can ease anxiety and insomnia, and its synergistic actions with vitamin D3 and calcium for bone health.
Soy isoflavones are one of the most studied forms of plant-based oestrogens. These compounds are thousands of times weaker than human oestrogen and have a modulating effect on hormone activity during menopause. Soy isoflavones are known to support bone and cardiovascular health and may also help reduce hot flushes.
When during menopause should I start taking balance?
You can start taking balance at any point during your menopause journey, from perimenopause through to post-menopause.
Can I use balance alongside HRT?
There are no known contraindications between the vitamins, minerals, and botanicals in balance and HRT.
Although phytoestrogens like the soy isoflavones found in balance are usually taken as an alternative to HRT, data from animal studies suggest that using soy isoflavones alongside HRT does not produce adverse effects. In fact, some research shows the combined use of HRT and soy isoflavones has a greater protective effect on cardiovascular risk factors than either HRT or isoflavones alone.
As with any supplement that is being used at the same time as a medication, it is advisable to leave a gap of at least 2 hours between taking HRT and using balance.
Can I take balance alongside other Pura® products?
Absolutely! You can use balance alongside any of the other collagen formulas in the Pura® range. It complements sleep, Flex+, Glow+, and protect, so you can design your own personal palette of collagen products to support joint health, hair, skin, nails, immunity, and a restful night’s sleep.
